Every Scoring Rule, And Why There Are Only Two

Both tables in full, the roster and waiver rules, and the record of a third system that was built, tested against the 2025 season, and cut.

FIRST PRINCIPLES

How scoring works at all

A captain picks one of two systems when the league is created, and it cannot change mid‑season. Both read the same player list and the same Tuesday snapshot; only the arithmetic differs. Every value is a whole number of hundredths of a point — a passing yard is 4, a receiving touchdown is 600 — so there are no fractions anywhere in settlement and the totals are exact.

2QB
3RB
4WR
2TE
2K
2DEF
15TOTAL

All fifteen score, every week, in both systems. No starting lineup, no bench. Position order everywhere is QB, RB, WR, TE, K, DEF.

SYSTEM ONE

TD Focused

Touchdowns dominate and yardage is earned in chunks against a threshold. A passer needs 150 yards before the first yardage point, a runner or receiver 50. Thresholds are per game, not per season.

PASSING POINTS
Passing touchdown 6
Passing 2-point conversion 2
Interception thrown −1
150 passing yards 1
Each additional 25 passing yards +1
RUSHING AND RECEIVING, COMBINED POINTS
Rushing or receiving touchdown 6
Rushing or receiving 2-point conversion 2
50 combined rush/receive yards 1
Each additional 15 rush/receive yards +1
Receptions not scored
KICKING POINTS
Field goal under 50 yards 3
Field goal 50+ yards 5
Extra point 1
DEFENSE / SPECIAL TEAMS POINTS
Return touchdown — kickoff, punt, interception, fumble 6
Safety 2
Sack 1
Turnover — fumble recovered or interception 1
POINTS ALLOWED BONUS POINTS ALLOWED BONUS
0–1 8 12–13 2
2–3 7 14–15 1
4–5 6 16–27 0
6–7 5 28–34 −2
8–9 4 35–41 −4
10–11 3 42+ −6

Kick-return touchdowns credit the defense, not the returner. A fumble recovered and scored by a team's own offense credits that offensive player instead.

SYSTEM TWO

Yards Focused

What ESPN, Yahoo, NFL.com and Sleeper run by default. Yards count from the first one, catches are worth half a point, and passing touchdowns are worth less than rushing ones.

THE DECISION

Why there is no third system

A third system was designed to sit between the other two — touchdowns at five, yards at eight hundredths, catches at a quarter point. Then every player-week of the 2025 regular season was scored through all three and the rankings compared. It did not survive.

RANK AGREEMENT, DRAFTED POOL QB RB WR TE
TD vs Yards 0.96 0.95 0.90 0.28
Yards vs Hybrid 0.99 0.99 0.99 0.95
TD vs Hybrid, recut 0.99 0.98 0.96 0.78
TD vs big-play recut 0.98 0.97 0.94 0.54

1.00 means the two systems rank players identically. The hybrid came back at 0.99 against Yards — same players, same order. It was recut twice, once toward the TD thresholds and once as an explosive-play system, and both times it collapsed onto one parent or the other. There was no third position to occupy, so a third choice would have been decoration.

TD against Yards is real, and it lives at tight end. At 0.28 they are barely the same position. TD Focused pays nothing for a 45-yard game because the threshold is 50, and most tight ends live between 40 and 60 yards — so the whole position reshuffles. Under 2025 numbers George Kittle ranks 3rd under TD and 13th under Yards. Travis Kelce goes the other way, 12th to 3rd.

Wide receiver moves too, at 0.90. Xavier Worthy goes 84th to 58th, Cooper Kupp 80th to 55th, Garrett Wilson 45th to 62nd. Quarterback, running back, kicker and defense barely move at all — good players are good under any rules, and kickers overlap 100%. The choice matters exactly where the data says it matters, and nowhere else.

EVERYTHING ELSE

Waivers, ties and the snapshot

THE WAIVER WINDOW

Opens Tuesday 9:00 AM ET, closes Thursday 6:00 PM ET — clear of the 8:15 kickoff. First twenty-four hours are claims, settled worst record first, so a bot cannot win the wire on reflexes. After that it is first come, first served. Four moves per window, every move like-for-like at the position.

BREAKING A TIE

Total yards first. Then total first downs. Then the hash of the final settlement record — a number nobody can predict on draft day, which is the point. Never signup order, which could be gamed.

THE SNAPSHOT

Tuesday 9:00 AM ET, every week. Not Monday — Monday morning misses Monday Night Football and would push those numbers into the following week. Tuesday catches Thursday, Sunday, Monday night and the London games.

CORRECTIONS

A stat correction filed after the snapshot does not reopen a scored week. The number as published is the number. That rule exists before the season starts, which is the only time such a rule can be set honestly.
